Rebel seventh and eighth-grade students took time to write and design support cards for a college cheerleader awaiting a lung transplant. The Chambers Academy students listened attentively as they absorbed the poignant story of University of West Alabama cheerleader, Libby Hankins. Her story was read and explained by Chambers Academy cheerleader and her personal friend, Peyton. The story, published in UWA Today magazine, told the challenging issues of daily life Hankins endures living with cystic fibrosis. Hankins’ morning routine each day includes an hour for medical needs that includes wearing a high-frequency chest wall oscillation vest to break up the sputum in the lungs. Peyton related the challenges to her classmate by explaining her own experience and challenges of living with the genetic disorder that affects the lungs. “Sharing her passion for others helps me understand what a great and caring person she is. This is the reason Chambers Academy is truly a ‘family’”, said Braxton.
